A former member of World Changers Church-New York, pastored by popular televangelist Creflo Dollar, claims the prosperity preacher pacified his congregation with two flat screen televisions after the backlash over his appeal to the public for million to help him purchase a luxury jet for his ministry."I'm one of those people that have said, I am not giving it to him; I'm giving it to the ministry because he does do good things around the world for other people. So when I'm giving, I'm giving to do outreaches and things like that," began the ex-member, identified only as Theresa, in an interview with the Advise Show TV."Trust me, I'm not defending him; because after I heard about this whole jet thing I was like, 'this is ridiculous. ' I was upset because he came back from his so-called sabbatical 'oh yeah, I 'm well-rested' but he didn't even offer no apology for what he did," she continued about Dollar's reaction to the backlash over the appeal many onlookers found to be extravagant."He just continued, 'OK, let's start this new series.' … Theresa noted that the million appeal for a new private jet wasn't the first time Dollar had asked the church for an extravagant amount of money.[And then] he just turned around and gave away two flat screen TVs at the end of the service," she explained. She claims the preacher once had a dream to purchase Madison Square Garden which is valued at about .5 billion."He told us he was trying to purchase Madison Square Garden and the people were looking at him like he was crazy," she said.
I dated as a Christian but was STILL all up in the world & I courted God's way-- where my husband and I didn't kiss until our wedding day. When asked why she would go back to the church after being hurt so many times she said her friends encouraged her to come back and told her "God is gonna work it out."As for what happened when Dollar faced his church for the first time after the jet debacle last month, Theresa said Dollar got a hero's welcome."When he stepped back on stage after that G650 jet thing, he received a standing ovation for about 2 minutes," she said.AN INTRODUCTION TO BLACK PREACHING STYLES (Note: a cassette, with keyed examples of excerpts from sermons, accompanied the original text, and is referenced in this document.) Geoff Alexander December 10, 1986 INTRODUCTION The art of oration may be one of the most underrated arts in the United States today, and one of the most under appreciated as well. into your courting relationship and you find yourself having to . You WANT to live for GOD for real but you aren't convinced that you should break up with your boo. And let's clear this up-- if you cannot STOP having sex-- lasciviousness has crept into your relationship. so tell your little flesh to shut up & be determined to obey GOD. And for those of you who are smiling as you read this & thinking.. we have messed around but haven't gone the whole way"-- well, babygirl, I'm talking to YOU as well. Then, you wonder why you want to live it out & be sexual with your guy! sometimes, you want to EXPRESS it physically by kissing, rubbing, cuddling.. YOU don't want your relationships to mirror your past relationships but you can't quite figure out how to "court" or date .. You KEEP taking your past ways of thinking from the world.. but you can't hear because your vision is all clouded because you're in "love"-- So first step-- go to God-- MAKE sure that God is ok with you even staying with that person. My now husband and I didn't hang out LATE at each others house! We were never at each others home late at night PERIOD. YOU will desire whatever you put in front of you & give your attention to.. So he should keep his paws off your body that doesn't belong to either one of you until you get MARRIED. DO you know that those things plant seeds in your heart. The black sermon is stated in the vernacular, with inflection and timing so musical that many have compared it in style to improvised jazz.Much of the sermon is improvised around a matrix both sacred and profane, and the style is cohesive enough that one can enter virtually any black Baptist, Methodist, or Pentecostal church from coast-to-coast and hear a sermon of similar form.Theresa said even though she likes the way Dollar preaches she didn't like not getting the opportunity to shake his hand while she was a member."He's untouchable. But I'm not sure how many he travels with, but yeah, he's untouchable," she continued."My personal opinion is that he doesn't want to deal with common folk because he has other people in place to deal with that.He likes to tell us that his schedule doesn't permit him to be on a commercial flight or to do these other things that pastors actually do.Because most of our verbal information arrives through the medium of radio or television, with networks centered in New York or Los Angeles, much of our oratory has become homogeneous, containing the same inflections, colloquialisms, and dialect. There is, however, one bastion of this art form which fights for survival on a weekly basis, and is pervasive enough that few people in this country live more than five or ten miles away from its auditorium: the Afro-American sermon.
